Studies on the Effectiveness of Hypnosis/ Hypnotherapy for weight-Loss
If you are a even a bit geeky like me: I like to know, if what I'm about to do, is based in fact or fiction; See below...
Hypnosis Over 30 Times as Effective for Weight Loss
This study investigated the effects of hypnosis in weight loss for 60 females, at least 20% overweight. Treatment included each person receiving both group and individual hypnosis. Hypnosis was more effective than a control group with the hypnosis group losing an average of 17lbs compared to an average of 0.5 lbs for the control group.
This study was completed in 1986 by Gordon Cochrane and J. Friesen and was reported in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Volume 54, Pages 489-492.
2 Years Later Hypnosis Subjects Continued To Lose Significant Weight
109 people completed a behavioural treatment program for weight management either with or without the addition of hypnosis. At the end of the nine week program, both interventions resulted in significant weight reduction. However, at the follow-up two years later the hypnosis subjects were found to have continued to lose significant weight, while those in the behavioural-treatment-only group showed little further change.
Reported in 1985 in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.
Hypnosis Subjects Lost More Weight Than 90% of Others and Kept it Off
Researchers analysed 18 studies comparing a cognitive behavioural therapy, such as relaxation training, guided imagery, self monitoring or goal setting with the same therapy supplemented by hypnosis. Those who received the hypnosis lost more weight than 90% of the non-hypnosis group, and maintained the weight loss two years after treatment ended.
This research was conducted by D. B. Allison and M. S. Faith at the University of Connecticut and was reported in 1996 in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Volume 64, Issue 3, Pages 513-516.
Hypnosis More Than Doubled Average Weight Loss
This study looked at the effect of adding hypnosis to cognitive-behavioural treatments for weight reduction and showed that the benefits of hypnosis increased substantially over time.
This study by Irving Kirsch in 1996 was published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Volume 64, Issue 3, Pages 517-519.
Hypnotherapy group with stress reduction achieved significantly more weight loss than two other treatments.
This was a randomised, controlled study of two forms of hypnotherapy (directed at stress reduction or energy intake reduction) compared with dietary advice alone in 60 obese patients who suffered from sleep apnoea. Those patients who received hypnotherapy showed significantly greater weight loss than those who received only dietary advice.
The research was carried out by J Stradlinga, D Roberts, A Wilson and F Lovelock at the Chest Unit of Churchill Hospital in Oxford, UK.
Hypnosis can more than double the effects of traditional weight loss approaches
An analysis of five weight loss studies reported in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology in 1996 showed that the " … weight loss reported in the five studies indicates that hypnosis can more than double the effects" of traditional weight loss approaches.
This analysis was completed by the University of Connecticut and published in the
Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology in 1996, Volume. 64, Issue. 3, Pages 517-519.
